Vermont Senator visits Lyndon Institute

October 29, 2008

Independent Vermont senator Bernie Sanders made a public appearance today to talk about the current economy crisis. But he wasn't addressing his usual demographic. This crowd was a bit younger, but no less important, he says, when it comes to this country's future.

Jammed into his busy political - and their busy academic - schedules-- an hour of discussion Tuesday afternoon. Sanders fielded questions from dozens of high schoolers at the Lyndon Institute in Lyndon center... Hoping to generate more interest in the political process... But knowing the teenage demographic can be a tough sell.

Sanders was on a mission, though-- telling the crowd- if ever there was a time to get involved, it's now. "The problems the country is facing are absolutely enormous." Sanders listed the issues: the war, global warming, health care, and - of course - the current economic crisis. "We're leaving them - in one sentence - over a trillion dollar debt."

On the subject of the economy, Sanders struck a nerve. "The big thing I'm concerned with is the economy... because at home we're cutting back on going out for dinner Friday night... and gas money..."

This group of seniors votes for the first time this year... "It's up to us to figure out who's going to lead the country." They all appreciated the opportunity to listen to a political leader... And ask him where he thinks the country is headed.

"Now that I talked to Mr. Sanders I feel more connected to government now."

Sanders was also asked for his personal opinion of the Vice Presidential and Presidential candidates. He doesn't know Gov. Palin... but he feels Sens. Obama, Biden, and McCain are all decent people. Obama, he says, is extremely smart... Biden- also smart, and a bit talkative... and McCain, he believes, is a better person than the campaign he's leading. Whoever is elected, though, Sanders says, will have a very tough job.
